The community of Jamesburg has come a long way in the past six years. The sidewalk and curbing program has created a way for residents to walk to the downtown area safely and most of all provided a safe path for our children to get to our two schools. Our “Safe Routes To School” program has been a great success and the yearly “Walk Your Child To School Day” has helped greatly in promoting this program.

What does the future hold for Jamesburg? While people see the downtown area improving, it is important that we continue to be proactive in development and welcoming new businesses into the community. While banks are a positive economic look in areas of the community, we still need to provide quality business opportunities for young entrepreneurs that will help the commercial tax base and provide for our citizens a high quality of life.

The demands placed on the community by State mandated programs puts a strain on resources, but over the past six years the administration, mayor and council have worked very hard to maintain reasonable growth and control over the increases needed in taxes to maintain our present services.

The State Legislature recently passed a 4% tax increase cap on the operational side of the budget, but did not take into account the ramifications of their decisions. They pushed through a “feel good” bill that hurt many small communities. We will survive this decision and continue to provide the services the community needs at a very high level.

Grants are one of the main avenues we have used to improve the community. The lighting of the ball fields on Augusta Street and the park improvements, along with the revitalizing of Veterans' Park were all completed via grants from the Open Space Project Funds of Middlesex County.

Jamesburg has also received grant money over the past year totaling $892,000 to complete phases one and two of restoration of Lakeview Mansion, the historic Buckelew House, one of our town treasures. The project includes structural repairs, heating, utility work, roof replacement and interior repairs along with professional costs. Milestones have been set and by Spring 2009 the improvements will be well underway and noticeable.

The goal of the council members seeking re-election this year on the democratic ticket is to continue to provide a high level of service and resources for the community so they are safe and comfortable in the community.
