Borough founder James Buckelew is commemorated with historic marker
The legacy of James Buckelew, the borough's namesake and early entrepreneur, will be memorialized in bronze Sunday. The Jamesburg Historic Association will unveil a bronze historic marker at 2 p.m. on June 11 in Buckelew Park. The marker is engraved with a picture of Lakeview, Buckelew Mansion, and a summary of the borough founder's accomplishments and contributions to the borough's development. "It's a proud moment for the community of Jamesburg to see our history on display for all to see and it will be there forever," honorary Borough Historian Tom Bodall said Tuesday. The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders donated the marker as part of its Historic Marker Project. Last year, the commission invited students, historical organizations, community groups and others interested in Middlesex County history to participate in the project, which aims to publicly recognize locations tied to the county's heritage. Mr. Bodall first learned about the opportunity in spring 2005, and requested that the county consider Jamesburg for participation. He said he saw it as a chance for many to become more familiar with local history. "Many people pass by the house every day and a lot of them don't know the story behind it," he said. "This way, even when the house is closed, people will be able to learn the history of the property." Jamesburg is the first recipient of a historic marker through the county program. "For Middlesex County to present us with the marker shows its recognition of the important contributions that Jamesburg has made to the county over the years," JHA President Ron Becker said Tuesday. "It's an honor to the Historical Association and to the people of Jamesburg."
